About Us

McClelland & Co carry out all types of cargo-related surveys and investigations, ranging over the majority of the United Kingdom and Ireland, including the Isle of Man.

Cargoes surveyed or investigated range from raw materials to fresh and frozen produce and to capital goods through consumer goods, and including anything in between. Problems dealt with include those aboard ships as well as storage, road, rail and air transportation and ancillary risks. Security assessments, risk assessments and loss prevention exercises are also undertaken.

Peter prides himself on being versatile when new products are encountered; allied with maintaining well-established methods and practices recognised by clients throughout the years.

Clients include cargo and legal liability insurers, ship owners, P + I clubs, road haulage operators, freight forwarders, cargo interests and many others. We regularly deal with cases ranging in value from a few hundred pounds up to, and exceeding £1M.

Dealing with cases can take anything from a few hours through to many months and has, on occasion, resulted in our surveyors appearing in court, arbitration and mediation as either witnesses of fact or experts. We are happy to provide expert comment on documents covering a wide range of cargo related subjects.

Peter joined the cargo surveying profession in 1970 after working for four years as a marine cargo claims clerk with a leading Liverpool insurance company. After working with the Lloyd's agency in Liverpool as a staff surveyor and with a leading firm of P+I surveyors, he joined Marker & Eccles as a partner in 1998, leaving to set up McClelland & Co in 2009.
